Love Will Be Our Lenten Calling

Sermon Notes

By Rev. Preston Shealy

Scripture:
Psalm 107:1-3; John 3:16-17
Theme:

Most of us know John 3:16, but are less familiar with verse 17.  That verse is where John reminds us that Jesus did not come into the world to condemn the world, but in order to save the world.  We know that Jesus came to save the world, but we’re not always sure about our role as Christians.  Join us Sunday as we seek to more fully understand what God expects from us on our journey of life and faith!

Reflections:

Fourth Sunday of Lent

Introit: A 2st century paraphrase of Psalm 107, the inspiration for our call to worship, “Give Thanks to God Who Hears Our Cries”.

Opening Hymn: The text was written by Fanny Crosby, and the hymn became popular in the US during the middle of the 20th century with the Billy Graham crusades; the first verse of “To God Be the Glory” references John 3:16-17.

Transition Hymn: Our transition hymn for the month of March will be “As the Deer”.

Special Music: “My Song Is Love Unknown” arranged by Larry Shackley.

Responsive Hymn: Our response to John 3:16-17. The footnotes of “What Wondrous Love Is This” states, “Its haunting melody proves the means of convincing us that the only adequate response to ‘wondrous love’ is to ‘sing on’”.

Sending Hymn: Returning to our Psalm 107 scripture; a hymn of thansgiving that originated as a simple family table prayer, “Now Thank We All Our God”.

Benediction: Verse two of  “Love Will Be Our Lenten Journey” sung to the PICARDY tune (“Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence”)
