Sermon Notes

By Rev. Preston Shealy

Scripture:
John 20:1-18; Acts 10:34-43
Theme:

Christ is Risen!  Christ is Risen indeed!

Join us on Easter as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord with a Sunrise Service at 7am on the hill behind the sanctuary along with an Easter Breakfast following that service and finishing off with our Sunday morning worship service in the Sanctuary at 10:30am.

At the Sunrise Service, we will look at John’s account of the resurrection and the central role Mary plays in his telling of the resurrection… imagining what may have taken place once Mary shared the news with Christ’s disciples.

At our main service, we will look at finding out more about who we are in light of the resurrection (John 20) while also getting insight from Peter’s account of the Easter events in Acts 10.

Reflections:

Easter Sunday

Introit: The Chancel Choir presents an anthem titled “He Is Alive!”, by Joel Raney.

Opening Hymn: A late-twentieth century text set to Beethoven’s ODE TO JOY, “Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna!”

Transition Hymn: Finishing up our transition hymn for the month of March, “As the Deer”.

Special Music: “Hail the Day That Sees Him Rise”, by Dan Forrest.

Responsive Hymn: “That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright”, the text comes from one of the earliest hymns to be written for a season of the church year; “… set here to a tune with Christmas associations, thus linking the two great festivals of the Christian year.

Sending Hymn: “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today!”; this traditional hymn’s tune is titled, appropriately, EASTER HYMN.

Benediction: For our Easter Benediction, and for the following Sundays of Easter, we sing the first verse of “Christ Is Alive!”,
