This week we continue our journey through Genesis, leaving the primordial history of Genesis 1-11, and starting the section of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs. This is the beginning of the Abraham Cycle, telling the story of the call of Abram (before the name change), and the promise of blessing. Abram is called to leave everything that he knows behind, and to go to the place that the LORD will show him. It is the very beginning of a journey of faith, one that will last for decades.
Abraham and Sarah are two of the many dreamers, immigrants, and refugees who are called to leave their homes, their way of life, the comfort and security that they have known. None knew what exactly would lie ahead, but the promise of blessing ahead was more alluring than that which lay behind.
The journey of faith is always a leaving behind and a calling into the unknown. Whether we are called to leave our boats and nets, take up our cross, or grasp a vision of human flourishing; we are always called to lay aside the things that have held us back, and run with perseverance the race that has been set before us. Our call is to ‘go.’
